The Legacy of Self-hatred in the Black Community

Self-hatred has been a long standing problem in the Black community. We have been conditioned to believe being Black is less than and not as good. Today I felt it first hand I was at my local coffee-house, standing behind this young white couple being served by a middle-aged black woman. She was new, I had only seen her there a few times but had never been served by her. She seemed nice. She was friendly, engaging, almost beaming. After a few minutes the young couple got their coffees, paid and they were on their way.

As I stepped to the front of the line, expecting to be greeted with the same warmth and friendliness, I was instead, greeted with a stony impatient stare. The moment she saw me her whole demeanor changed. She sighed and almost rolled her eyes as I walked up to the counter. She plastered on a fake smile and asked in a bored monotone voice what I wanted. Gone was the happy-to-serve-you attitude. There was no friendly chit-chat, although I tried to no avail.

She looked at me and curtly told me the price of my order then looked past me to the white couple standing behind me as if I had never been there.  Her beaming face shining, her voice lifted, and the friendly chit-chat was back in full form. I was an inconvenience; someone she had to serve, not someone she wanted to serve. She shoved my overpriced cup of coffee over to me and before I could pick it up, she was back to skinning and grinning for the hipster white couple behind me.

I felt angry and shamed. I felt like going back in there and telling her something about herself, but I didn’t. Instead, I took my coffee, tipped her a dollar and left wondering why some black people feel the need to ingratiate themselves to white people at the cost of other black people? Read more...

The White Supremacist in the White House

There has been a lot of discussion about what ESPN’s sports commentator Jemele Hill said about Donald Trump being a white supremacist and if she should be fired for expressing it on her company’s twitter account. The debate seems to focus on should she have used her ESPN platform to promote her personal views or not, but the important aspect of this story is the fact that what she said about Trump is true.

A Fire-able Offense

It’s absurd for Sarah Huckabee Sanders to stand in the White House briefing room and say, with a straight face, that Hill’s commentary about Trump is a fireable offense. It might be a “fireable offence” if it wasn’t true. Here’s a question: when was the last time you heard a spokesperson for the White House, calling for the firing of a citizen from their day job because of a statement they made about the president?

Think about it; it’s never happened before. This only goes to show how thin-skinned Donald Trump and his comrades are. Compare this to the dignified grace of President Barack Obama, who endured an eight-year barrage of hatred, racism, and lies from the right-wing voters, media outlets, and Donald Trump himself. So, for Sarah Huckabee Sanders to stand up there, on the behest of the tiny-hand tyrant, and call for Jemele Hill to be fired for stating the obvious should be a fireable offense.

From the moment Donald Trump stepped onto the national stage, leading up until now, he has done nothing to discourage that opinion; he seems to go out of his way to perpetuate it. If Trump has done anything at all, he’s exposed America for what it really is: a country filled to the brim with white people who are likely to vote along cultural and racial lines than not. Underneath all the blister and raging, what drives white supremacist the most is fear- the fear that their whiteness means nothing and that they are not inherently special.

White supremacists fear progress and equality because they don’t want minorities to have the same unbiased opportunities that they have. They are weak cowards who can only find meaning in their pathetic lives by pretending that they are divinely anointed by some higher power. They are vindictive and spiteful creatures of pettiness who can only get what they want by bullying, lying and, in many cases, violence (Trump’s Rally). Does this sound like anyone we know? I’ll give you two hints;

  • Hint number one: he lives in the White House.
  • Hint number two: his name is Donald Trump.

Donald Trump is a white supremacist. If not, he is doing one bang-up job playing one on television; he should have received an Emmy already.

Yours

My tawny sweet that besieged my soul
Shattering like glass my iron will
I kneel before thou shining grace
A lamb set to slaughter
I offer all that I am
Take me or doom me forever lost
I am yours.

The World

Few could know the darkest hour

That comes into the light

Exposing the gray mood

That hides its purpose from the hearts that turned

The world into a place that would not love.
